The Hidden Layer Hurting Your Lawn

Thatch is the layer of dead grass, roots, and organic debris that accumulates between the soil surface and the green growth above it. A thin layer of thatch is normal and actually beneficial — but when it builds up beyond half an inch, it starts working against your lawn.

Thick thatch blocks water, air, and nutrients from reaching the soil. It creates a spongy surface that holds moisture and encourages disease. Roots start growing into the thatch layer instead of the soil, making the lawn more vulnerable to drought and stress. The grass looks fine on the surface but it’s struggling underneath.

Dethatching removes that buildup mechanically, pulling the dead material out of the turf and opening the lawn back up. It’s a targeted service that makes an immediate difference — and one that most lawns need every few years to stay in peak condition.
